Could You Get One of these Insider Cruise Ship Jobs?

[ Posted January 28th, 2008 ]

Following on from our earlier tip which you can read here I said that "97% of cruise ship vacancies are never advertised". This is mainly because applicants who apply directly to the cruise line company get most of the jobs before they even get to the advertising stage!

However, what I didn’t mention was this…

There are also many jobs on cruise ships that are completely unique to particular cruise line companies - and even specific cruise ships. And these "insider positions" NEVER get advertised. Ever.

In fact, the only way an "outsider" would even know that these positions existed would be by going on a cruise vacation and speaking to crewmembers who work on the ship!

So what types of ‘insider positions’ am I talking about?

Well, consider this: if a cruise ship has a rock climbing wall or a "surf park" or an ice rink or a cinema or a bowling alley or any other onboard ‘fun’ facility like this, then it needs staff, like you, to operate them.

Many of these jobs can be found on all of the new "Mega ships" and plenty of smaller ships. But these positions are never advertised.

Another good example is the onboard internet cafe. Nearly all cruise lines these days have an internet cafe, and all cruise ships need to have staff onboard to operate them.

Do you think "internet cafe" jobs ever get to the advertising stage? Rarely. These ‘insider positions’ are nearly always filled by people who simply apply directly to the cruise line in the hope that such a position exists.

Why don’t you consider applying for some of these "insider jobs" before anybody else does?

You’ll find all the details for these types jobs in our Cruise Line Directory

Don’t Wait for Cruise Ship Vacancies to Come to You!

[ Posted January 21st, 2008 ]

Have systemised "plan of attack" when applying for any cruise ship vacancies.

From the emails and comments we receive it seems that quite a few people simply wait for suitable vacancies on cruise ships to become available before applying. Of course, you should keep your eyes open for any new cruise ship vacancies that appeal to you.

But remember, at least 97% of cruise ship jobs are never advertised - so as well as waiting for the vacancies to appear on our Cruise Ship Jobs Directory or on any other job site, it’s also very important to be proactive and go after the jobs by applying directly to as many cruise line companies as you can

You’ll find full contact details for ALL major and minor cruise lines, concessionaires and agencies listed in our regularly updated A-Z Cruise Line Contact Directory.

If there’s a particular type of job on a cruise ship that you could really see yourself doing, but you haven’t seen a vacancy for it yet - it does not mean that the job is not available! Often these vacancies get snatched up way BEFORE they even get to the advertising stage by people who simply send off targeted resumes and cover letters and constantly put themselves at the front of the line for the job they want.

Another method that should definitely be on your agenda this year (if you’re really serious about this) is attending cruise ship job fairs. More cruise lines than ever are using job fairs, interview days and auditions to hire their staff. This way you get to meet and speak to the hiring staff face-to-face, ask questions and present yourself in the best possible light.

Job fairs are a great way for you to get hired quickly and easily!

These job fairs and recruitment days are held in lot’s of locations around the world throughout the year.

We have recently added a Hiring Calendar to WorkOnCruiseShips.com so that members can see all the hiring events that are happening around the world in 2008.

There is probably one happening near you this year.

Current members can check our cruise line hiring calendar by going here.

Okay, to recap, here’s what you should be doing to maximise your chances of filling a vacancy on a cruise ship in 2008:

1) Check the Cruise Ship Job Listings on a regular basis for suitable vacancies.

2) Apply directly to as many cruise line companies as you can using the details you’ll find in our A-Z Cruise Line Contact Directory.

3) Check the cruise line hiring calendar on a regular basis for hiring events that are happening by you.

10 Tips for Creating a Winning Cruise Ship Jobs Employment Package that Gets You the Interview!

[ Posted January 11th, 2008 ]

These cruise ship jobs Tips are courtesy of WorkOnCruiseShips.com member Indy from the Philippines.

Quite recently Indy received not one, but TWO cruise ship job offers, from two different cruise lines and for two totally different positions onboard.
Learn The Insider Secrets On How To Get Cruise Ship Jobs
Now, if you’ve been trying to get hired by a cruise line for any length of time, then you’ll know that this is quite an achievement!

Indy has kindly agreed to share his advice for putting together a great cruise ship application package that gets you the interview.

Here’s Indy’s "Top Tips":

Tip 1: List down in a notebook all the work you’ve done in the past; employed work AND other non-paid jobs, your skills and trainings you acquired. You also need to list down in it any certificates you have.

Tip 2: After doing so, rewrite them again from top to bottom listing what your best strengths are to the "least" strength you think you have.

Tip 3: Next, find out what cruise jobs are currently available. You can do that by visiting the Cruise Ship Job Vacancies.

Tip 4: From these available positions think about which ones best match your experiences, skills, qualifications, personality and desires.

Tip 5: After deciding on your desired cruise positions construct your resume immediately. Carefully check your resume for errors (even the margins are important!) and make it somewhat "colorful".

Tip 6: Choose words that are positive and give the cruise employer the impression that you are confident. Never write things that are "over" of what you really are made of. And do not "undervalue" yourself also. Just choose the right words. .

Tip 7: Try to target your resume for each specific position that you apply for. This is really important in the cruise line industry.

Tip 8: When you’ve finished your resume, let your family and friends "criticize" it. I did mine.

Tip 9: When you are satisfied with your resume, then FORMULATE your cover letter.  Your cover letter should LEAD the recruiter to READ your resume. Your resume should LEAD the recruiter to CONTACT you and BEG for an interview.

When everything’s ready, then it’s time to send it.

Tip 10: Don’t take too long over this process. If you can, try to start with it today and apply tomorrow. If need be, burn the "midnight oil" so that you can land that interview within the week.

Bonus Tip 1: Make sure you send it to the RIGHT address with the RIGHT name of the contact person in the RIGHT position.

Bonus Tip 2: While you’re waiting, brush up on your skills for the job and try to ask yourself some questions that they might ask you in an interview.

Bonus Tip 3: Use a notebook to log down ALL of your cruise ship job hunting activities, including: the positions that you apply for, the date and time that you applied, the name and position of recruiter, the name of the agency and their website and physical address.

This is great advice from a guy who has landed himself TWO cruise ship job offers in a matter of weeks. In fact his biggest headache now is choosing which company to work for! (Incidentally this started an interesting discussion in our cruise job forum which you can read here.)

Why do you want to work on a cruise ship?

[ Posted January 4th, 2008 ]

Checklist: Is Working on a Cruise Ship Really for You?When the idea of working on a cruise ship first popped into my head years ago, I was indifferent about many things that are important to me today.

Back then I was young, free and single and I wanted to see the world, enjoy new life experiences and meet lots of people from different backgrounds and nationalities. But most importantly, I was eager to do something more exciting with my life.

At the time, this was my biggest motivator.

Still, I vividly recall leaving my family behind for the first time and wondering how the next 6 months away from my family would impact me as a person, and I quietly asked myself, am I doing the right thing? I had heard all the stories about the long hours involved with working on a cruise ship and about how some of the passengers can be rude and very demanding.

Getting Hired as a Couple on a Cruise Ship But of course this didn’t bother me. I was on my way to a new adventure, I was going to make decent money, meet good people from all over the globe, get to visit some amazing places - and as a young, single guy I couldn’t help but think about the girls I would hopefully meet :-0)

As events would unfold it soon became clear that I had definitely made the right decision. Sure, I worked hard, but the positive rewards I reaped from my experiences, far outweighed any negatives that came with the job.

I say these things to illustrate the point that it’s important for YOU to give plenty of thought as to why you want to work on a cruise ship. You need to have a compelling reason which will intensify your desire to do whatever it takes to land that dream cruise job.

I can tell you that the biggest reason why most people don’t land their dream job is simply because they don’t get started or they give up at the first sign of rejection. Keeping your most compelling reason for wanting to work on a cruise ship at the forefront of your mind will keep you excited and motivated to get a job that can be a positive, rewarding and life-changing experience.
