Best Months to Apply for Cruise Ship Jobs

Although there is no wrong time to apply for a cruise ship job, there are a few months during the year that cruise lines increase their hiring efforts.  The best months to apply are those that are leading up to prime holiday periods, such as summer vacation and Christmas holidays.

Therefore getting your resume out in time, in order for you to be interviewed, hired and placed on a ship is all about timing.  September and October are the best months to apply if you want to try to get hired to work during the busy Christmas vacation.

For the most part, many cruise ship jobs are not seasonal and hiring occurs throughout the year.  But some seasonal jobs offer great opportunities to get your foot in the door.

An excellent example of this is the job of a youth counsellor.  Youth counsellors are employed year round.  But, during the holiday periods when the number of kids cruising increases, so does the number of counsellors required.  Although many of these counsellors may be teachers (working during their own vacation), other counsellors may have the intention to gain some onboard experience in order to apply for a fulltime position.

The Big Mistake Most People Make when Applying for Cruise Jobs

Here’s a short but crucial tip:

When you are applying to work for a cruise line company, whether that’s a large line or a smaller specialty line, be very specific about what position you would like to do on board their ships.

It sounds obvious and yes, I’ve mentioned this many times before, but still we see far too many resumes going out that are just not clear enough about which cruise jobs are being applied for.

And that’s a big mistake I don’t want you to make.

If you’re applying to be an Assistant Purser, then state that clearly at the top of your resume and on your cover letter. If you’re applying to work in Food & Beverage, then put down exactly what job you feel most suitable for in that department; whether that’s a waiter/waitress, a bartender, etc..

The most important point I want to get across to you is that you must never to send a ‘general’ application… and never think that a cruise ship recruiter will look at your skills and experience and then choose a suitable position for you. They won’t. Not when they’ve got another 500 applications waiting to be looked at!

For the absolute best chance of success your CV/resume must be targeted to one specific position. For a large list of possible positions you can do on a cruise ship, see our list of common cruise ship positions here.
